From Stagnant to Stunning: How I'm Bringing My Lake Back to Life ⛑️
Watch me wage war on green algae!
Algae control is a major issue for many still waters, ponds and carp lakes. Especially those, like ours, that are run as commercial fisheries. We’ve learned a lot over the last 13 years and one thing is for sure, it’s a problem that cannot be ignored. With global warming, things are only going to get worse. In this video I show how we are experimenting with two methods that we haven't tried before as we felt that our existing strategy was not sustainable in the long term. This project only began in April 2024 and is on-going but the initial results are positive.

7 Annoying Carp Fishing Headaches (1-to-1 Fix With Matt)
Просмотров 23 тыс.21 день назад
Let’s fix some common problems you can have in your carp fishing. Although carp fishing isn’t difficult to get into, there are lots of details that you need to get right in order to maximise your chances. Over the years I’ve made every mistake imaginable and learned my lessons the hard way! During this tuition session with one of our guests, we went through some issues and questions that Niall ...
STOP Using Inline Leads Like This (Here’s WHY)
Просмотров 66 тыс.Месяц назад
I never use an inline lead straight out of the packet. The problem with standard inline leads is that the carp can use the weight of the lead to throw the rig. On certain waters, it’s not an issue and you can catch plenty of carp. But when you go to a new water, with more pressured fish, or fewer carp, a standard inline lead setup can let you down. There are several ways to transform a standard...
How to Spool 3 Reels (EVENLY) With 1000m of Line (using backing line)
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 месяца назад
Here’s the perfect method to split 1000m of mono between 3 reels when you're using backing line. Each time we put new line on our reels, we’ve got the same old problem of trying to fit 1000m of line across 3 spools. It’s particularly tricky on big pit reels when the total capacity of the spools is greater than the amount of new line we’ve got on. The best way to make sure your reels are perfect...
100% Bombproof Carp Rig (ANYTIME / ANYWHERE)
Просмотров 67 тыс.2 месяца назад
This rig gives you a guaranteed presentation and keeps you fishing in all conditions. The rig is a variation on the mono D with a blowback tube to create a long D. This makes the bottom bait sit lower down, near the bend of the hook and helps the rig to flip and turn faster and give great hook holds. This rig is impossible to tangle and will keep you fishing in all sorts of conditions. And if I...

      Hmm, well I’d say find some fish to cast too. Wang them out and sit on your hands. Do not 2nd guess yourself, don’t move the rigs. Just leave them and see what happens. You need to have the confidence for them to work their magic. If your hooks are sharp and rigs are good, and you cast them in the right place at the right time, you’ll catch. If not, then reevaluate and try again another day.

    Hi, I'm new to carp fishing and have some questions, can this rig be fished with tight line, and if it is, does this rig tubing be very noticeable for carp, and can I use leadcore instead to keep it down?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 3 дня назад

      You can fish this rig with tight lines, semi tight or slack (I’ve done a video on that: ruclips.net/video/VdeLpRcrhwo/видео.html). Rather than focus on whether the carp can see the tubing, you need to think about what’s appropriate for the fishing situation. I never use leadcore and it’s banned on many venues. Use lead free leader if allowed. Lead core isn't going to be any better than rig tubing if you fish a tight line to the wrong spot at the wrong angle.

    Hey Matt love your videos. I am an American carp angler and was wondering if you had any tips for me. The wild carp here receive little to no angling pressure. Any tips on bait selection? Wouldn’t I have to pre bait a lot before the carp recognize boilies as a food source? Wouldnt things like bright pop ups work better because the fish aren’t very wary?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 4 дня назад

      You don’t have to ‘educate’ wild carp to eat boilies, they will identify them as food source and eat them readily. Don’t worry about bright popups, or any popups, I just use bottom baits straight out of the bag, same as my freebies. Surely the abrasive edges from the lead would damage the mono over time.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 9 дней назад

      We’ve been using in-line leads at the fishery for 14 years and I’ve not once seen an instance where the lead has caused abrasion damage to the mainline. Lead is quite a soft material so there’s nothing to worry about on that front. Obviously that doesn't mean to say you shouldn't check your mainline regularly for damage. Our venue is a bit rocky and damages the mainline quite quickly so cutting back the damaged line is a regular thing anyway. Swapping to a swivel based lead system does not solve the line damage problem, so it’s got nothing to do with the inline leads.

    Been watching a lot of your videos and thanks for the incredible work you are doing, I learn so much that it make my brain spin... One thing that wonders me is why not use a palomar knot at the svirwel end ?? it should stronger and also uses less material.... I just know you have a good reason, but can not figure out why.. I understand with a think monoline, but with braid ?? all the other fishers use a palomarknot, but not the carpanglers, they use a version of the clinch/bloodknot.. Why ??

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 9 дней назад

      Hi, thanks for the support. Okay, the short answer is because it isn't appropriate. The long answer is a lot more complicated but here goes! In carp fishing we use braid for hooklinks and for mainline. If I’m using some braided hooklink and I wanted to tie it to a swivel directly then I could in theory use a palomar knot but I’d never choose to do that because it’s slower and difficult to do. The Palomar is great if you are tying to a swivel and the swivel isn't connected to anything but when I tie a hooklink to a swivel, the swivel would already be tied to the mainline or a leader so how am I going to tie the Palomar knot? I can’t just pass the swivel through the loop without passing the whole rod through. I could make the loop bigger and pass the rig through that loop before tightening down. It’s possible but not simple. It’s just easier and quicker to use a 5 turn uni knot or double uni knot. Carp fishing hooklink are rated at either 25 lbs or 35 lbs and in my tests I can deadlift an 8kg kettle bell with 35 lb Armourlink which is strong enough to bank a catfish of 135lbs so why would I need to use a different knot? It’s only hearsay that the Palomar knot would be stronger. It doesn't matter what the theory say, what matters to me is: is it strong enough for what I need and can I achieve that knot consistently?” The other time we use braid is for mainline but we never use braid tied directly to the swivel. We’d always tie to a leader. That might be mono leader or a spliced loop leader. The palomar knot is not applicable for a mono leader and I’ve never even thought about trying to tie braided mainline to a lead free leader. I think you’d have a lot of trouble tightening it down because the braid won’t flow well over a woven material. I’ve spent the last 15 years tying and testing knots. I use what works for me and is easy to do 😊

    • @clausnielsen3155
      @clausnielsen3155 9 дней назад

      @@matthewcollinsangler Thanks, it all makes sense, I am comming from spinning with much thinner braided lines, which has a tendensy to cut itself when the tension gets to high, mostly when I have a hold on a rock or something else.. That is not really an issue in presenting a biat for a carp og Tench, there are a lot of test of knotstrengths on youtube, most find that the palomarknot is the strongest also the "stupid angler knot" should be very strong, but as I do not need to tow in containerships, I do not really need the extra strength.. 🤣

    We can debate stability, clutch settings etc all day long, i use both, if the ground is too hard i can't push sticks in by hand i don't wonna use a mallet to get the desired depth for stability so I'll use a pod. Again, using a bivvy peg on the pod but having to mallet that in defeats my purpose of choosing which one of the two to use. Jrc x lite pod about 25 yrs old, still love it, does the job and now has sentimental value from all the memories lol. ✌️🇬🇧

      Hi mate, I wouldn't worry about the palm test. It’s very crude and it doesn't accurately represent how the rig actually moves in the water. And it doesn’t work as well with mono as it does with braid because mono is so stiff. This simple rig has been around for 30+ years and many thousands of anglers have caught countless carp using it, so you can use it with confidence.

      It's going to be longer than that to give a full analysis. We'd just done our second treatment in this video, that was 4 weeks ago, since then we've had big storms and a bit of flooding, so we've lost water, and we'll do another (planned) treatment over the summer. What I noticed during the 4/5 days of stormy weather and heavy rains is that the oxygen didn't fall as much as it would have previously and it's recovered and stayed more stable ever since, so the signs are still extremely positive so far. I'll provide a fuller update in our winter fishery management update.

    Lakes are an eco system and with a lot of fish and wild life, they are nutrient rich environments. with the warmer summers single celled algae are always going to pose a problem and achieving a balance is a nightmare. As you know bacteria is your best friend. In smaller ponds wetland filters or bog filters do a fantastic job of addressing the balance. Aeration has to be done very carefully, there are many lakes that killed their stock by doing this wrong, The last thing you want to do is stir up the bottom of the lake and distributing Ammonia, I wish you the very best of luck!

      Thank you very much! Yes, I totally agree with what you're describing. I've been managing this lake for 13 years, went through lots of issues and learnt plenty along the way. I have a great fishery consultant to guide me and help me balance that precious ecosystem.

    was that water hemlock i think it was - NOT cow parsely mate ... if it looks like cow parsley but is out around may/june and is near water it is water hemlock and deadkly poisonous dont touch it.

    Hi Matthew really like your channel and your approach to carp fishing. Having returned to the sport after many years it all seemed very baffling you helped me no end with rigs etc. Can you point me in the direction of french river carping content that you may have done we have just returned from france and I was doing a bit of lure fishing on the river vienne near chinon i have never seen such large carp and would love to try my hand when we return later in the year. I only fish our club waters here with carp to about 20 lb and have quite light gear so need to invest certainly in a rod would you think 3lb tc is sufficient ? When you fish the rivers do you fish in the flow? Many thanks again for your videos regards keith

      Hi Keith, My favourite rods for river carping are 9ft - 3lb TC Scopes. Rivers are rough and rocky and covered in zebra mussels. For the mainline I use a 20lb mono or 40lb braid. I always use 5-10m of heavy duty mono snag leader (0.50 or 0.60). River carp can be caught in the flow or in the eddies but you need to lead around first to establish what the ground is like or you’ll lose whatever you hook. Any rod will do for this, if you don’t have a delicate leading rod then just spool up the 3lb rod/rods with braid and use those as a feature finder before clipping a rig on. How does it hook the carp when the lead runs down the line ? I thought the lead helps hook the fish ?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 11 дней назад

      With a running rig, I’m not using the weight of the lead to hook the fish. It’s the elasticity of the mono and the tightness of the clutch that do the hooking for me. If you want to know more, I explain the difference between lead clips and running rigs in this video: ruclips.net/video/ckzalwJuh0c/видео.html

      Would this rig work with 12lbs line ?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 11 дней назад

      @@LewisReynolds-mr2zz Yes mate it does but it wouldn't choose a material that thin if I was casting a long way but I’d happily use it at 60 yards. Just bear in mind that 12lb mono is quite delicate and you should only use a rig once. You can re-use most makes of beads multiple times 👍

    If you take a torch or lighter for long enough, you can heat up a cheap knife and as long as you have quality metal reels you wont mess them up. A little bit of common sense is needed. Dont burn yourself or the paint(rare) pull it back and you nail clippers for the last little bits if you being careful with your expensive reels. Its not too hard not to mess up. Plus it melts together where you cut keeping it relatively together so you can throw it away. A bunch of small pieces seems less dangerous melted tg than a loose wrapped spool that can come unraveled.

    I was wondering what sort of percentage of the green algae floats? If it’s a high number & increases at the peak of day then could a surface skimmer turned on just at that time of day help? Possibly just pump the algae heavy water straight out into the stream?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 11 дней назад

      Hi mate, I understand what you are saying but algae is a problem during the summer and at that time of year, depending on rainfall, we are fighting to maintain lake level so losing water down the outflow is not an option.

    Hi Matt, Would it not be sufficient to use a pinned lead clip system and not insert the pin (makes it very little force for the swivel to come free of the clip)?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler 11 дней назад

      Hi there, it is an option to do this if you use a thin lead free leader material like the 40lb Cling-On and fine mainline such as 0.35 or smaller but if something jams up and prevents the lead clip from sliding off the leader, the tail rubber is forced tighter onto the lead clip which is the last thing you need. This is why I don’t fish like this. If you want to fish with a running rig, it’s far safer to use a large bore plastic run ring that buffers up against some kind of buffer bead or sleeve. Here’s a quick overview of what I use (full video on this in the future): instagram.com/p/CsoJFuBMfH7/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
